Big Hitting Leads Softball to Two Wins in Kissimmee

The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team picked up two wins at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL on Thursday, March 17.  With wins over Youngstown State University and Houston Baptist, the Knights improve to 10-5 on the season.

Youngstown State started the morning game hot, taking a six-run lead through the fifth inning.  Backed by a two-run homerun from freshman Maria Roney (Anacortes, WA/Anacortes) and a grand slam from classmate Berkleigh Massey (Oceanside, CA/Rancho Buena Vista), the Knights rallied for eight runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-6 lead.

Kirsten Shreve (Kent, WA/Kentwood) started the game on the mound for the Knights.  Caitlin Bradac (Garden Grove, CA/Garden Grove) served as the relief pitcher.  The two combined for 11 strikeouts.

In the second game of the day the Knights took on Houston Baptist.  Maire Shaughnessy (Culpeper, Va./Highland) led the team on the mound with a one-hitter.

Roney hit her second two-run shot of the day to lead the Knights' offensive effort.  The Knights were able to stay hot in the batter's box to score five runs, while holding HBU scoreless.

"It was a pretty exciting day," said Head Coach Dale Martin.  "Our pitching did very well and our bats came alive for a few innings today.  If we show consistency, we'll be on the right track."
