The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team led from start to finish in all three sets in the Knights' non-conference match against Saint Peter's to earn a 3-0 straight-set victory Wednesday in Hackensack, NJ.
With their second win over Saint Peter's on the year, the Knights improve to 11-6, while the Peahens fall to 0-18.
Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) put together her fourth match with 20-plus kills on the season with seven in each set to finish with 21 on the night. The junior from Chatsworth, CA, who had a .645 hitting percentage in the match, now has 308 kills, surpassing the 300-kills mark for the third season in a row.
The Knights gained control of the first set with an early 8-2 lead. Saint Peter's would not go away, however, cutting FDU's lead to 10-9 on a service error by the Knights. Four FDU kills later, the Knights seized a 14-9 advantage. They were able to extend their lead to 18-11 and eventually took a 25-16 first-set win.
In the second set, the Knights hit the ground running with a 7-0 lead out of the gate. That lead grew as
Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) set up teammate after teammate. Willey finished with 35 assists, including 22 in the second set alone. FDU reached its largest lead of the set when a
Taylor Roland-Buohl (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) ace made it 20-5. The Knights went on to claim a 25-11 win for a 2-0 edge.
FDU put the match away with a 25-16 victory in the final set behind 4-0 and 5-0 runs in the middle of the set.
The Knights made the most of their serves with 10 aces, four courtesy of Wheeler, two apiece from
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach ) and Roland-Buohl and one from
Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) and Willey.
Around the net,
Sarah Berkland (Newton, MA/Newton North) had eight kills to go along with two block assists, while
Meghan Alger (Cheltenham, MD/Bishop McNamara) had a big night with a solo block and three block assists. Eight different players recorded digs for the Knights, led by Semler with a match-best 12.
Laura Reinhart and Lexandra Wirth led the Peahens' offense with eight and six kills, respectively. Saint Peter's finished with a .085 hitting percentage.
As a unit, the Knights had a hitting percentage of .330 to pick up their third 3-0 win of the 2011 season.
The Knights will look to run their winning streak to three with a return to NEC play on Saturday, Oct. 8, for a home test against Quinnipiac. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
