Facing a crucial Northeast Conference road test against Bryant on Sunday afternoon, the Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team responded with a 3-1 come-from-behind victory in Smithfield, RI.
The win helps the Knights (14-7, 4-3 NEC) get back in the win column and earn a split in their New England road trip. Bryant (9-15, 3-6 NEC) has now lost three matches in a row.
The first set did not go the Knights' way, as Bryant came away with a 25-20 win. With the set even at 11-11, Jazmin Stoner's kill broke the tie and gave the Bulldogs a lead they were able to maintain until the end.
Backed by five kills from junior
Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep), the Knights bounced back in the second to win by a 25-18 margin. FDU led by as many as seven points on three separate occasions including with the score at 23-16 late in the set. Freshman
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach ) picked up back-to-back kills, both off
Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) assists, to end the set.
Wheeler finished with 26 kills, Braga had seven to go with 11 digs while Willey set up her teammates with 48 assists on the day.
The Knights took a 2-1 lead with a 25-13 win in the third. The win was highlighted by a 9-0 run to finish out set with four kills from Wheeler over that stretch.
FDU once again was too much on offense for the Bulldogs in the fourth with a team hitting percentage of .395 in the set to finish with a .268 percentage for the match. The Knights relied on Wheeler on offense, who came through with 10 fourth-set kills.
On defense, the Knights finished with seven blocks, with four bock assists from senior
Sarah Berkland (Newton, MA/Newton North). Her classmate,
Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) recorded a match-high 26 digs in the win.
Stoner's 12 kills and Jadith Lorenzo's 36 assists led Bryant's offense.
The Knights return to action on Saturday, Oct. 22, for a 1 p.m. match with Robert Morris at Stratis Arena in Hackensack, NJ.
