The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team could not overcome 60 Robert Morris kills as the Knights dropped a 3-1 decision to the Colonials in an NEC match Saturday in Moon Township, PA. The Knights (9-6, 0-2) have now suffered three consecutive losses as the Colonials (8-10, 4-0) have now won five in a row.
FDU was done in by a 9-0 run in the middle of the first set by the Colonials to fall behind 1-0 with a 25-16 loss in the set.
In the second set, the Knights, who had trailed by as many as seven points, fought all the way back to cut their deficit to 18-17. The comeback fell short as the Colonials came away with a 25-19 win.
FDU climbed back in the contest with a 25-22 third-set win to trim the Colonial's lead to 2-1. The third set was highly contested with 18 ties before the Knights pulled away thanks to two RMU attack errors and one of
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach )'s 10 kills on the afternoon. Braga and
Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep)'s 21 kills paced the offense for the Knights.
The final set was again back and forth with 14 ties and six lead changes. With the Knights leading 25-24 and on the brink of tying the match at two sets apiece, Robert Morris was able to square things at 25-25 and extend the match. After a Colonials' point, the Knights claimed a 27-26 lead on back-to-back Braga kills. RMU managed the final three points, however, to take a 29-27 fourth-set win.
Wheeler had her eighth double-double of the season with 10 digs to go along with her 21 kills.
Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) also had a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs.
Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) chipped in with a match-best 24 digs.
The Colonials had three players with double-digit kills, led by Lindsey Monger's 21. As a team, Robert Morris had a .213 hitting percentage to FDU's .104.
The Knights will try to regroup when they take on the Saint Francis PA Red Flash on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m. in Loretto, PA.
