Baseball Swept By Quinnipiac: 13-8 and 11-4

The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team was swept Friday afternoon versus Northeast Conference foe, Quinnipiac, Friday afternoon in Hamden, CT.  Game one went nine innings, while game two was only seven innings.  The Bobcats rallied from five runs down in the first game to earn the 13-8 victory.  In game two, Quinnipiac took advantage of five Knights' errors and jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings in game two and cruised to an 11-4 victory.  With the sweep, the Bobcats improve to 13-29 (12-10 NEC) on the season, while the Knights fall to 10-33 (5-17 NEC) overall.

 

In game one, junior DJ Robinson (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) scored the first run of the game for the Knights on sophomore Mike Eliasen (Swedesboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic)'s RBI fielder's choice in the top of the second.  Freshman Eric Andrerson later followed with a sacrifice fly to drive home junior Joe Martino (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) to put the Knights up 2-0.

Robinson extended the lead to 4-0 in the third as he blasted his fifth bomb of the season, a two-run opposite field shot, over the right field fence to score fellow classmate Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney).

The Bobcats got on the board in the bottom of the third as they scored three times to cut the Knights' lead to 4-3.  Joe Polestsky had a two-run single in the inning.

Sophomore Scott Morrison (Coral Springs, FL/J.P. Taravella)'s run-scoring single in the fourth extended the lead to 5-3.  Sophomore Ryan Kresky (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) scored on the play.

However, the Bobcats plated five runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take their first lead of the game, 8-5.  Three Bobcats knocked in runs with RBI singles.

In the top half of the sixth, the Knights' rallied to tie the game at eight as they put up a three spot.  Eliasen drove home Martino to start the scoring.  Anderson then drove home Kresky with an RBI groundout.  Eliasen the tied the game as he scored on a wild pitch.

Ryan Ullrich's RBI single in the bottom half of the frame put the Bobcats back ahead, 9-8.

Quinnipiac tacked on three more runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 12-8.  Brian Monack and Poletsky each had RBI singles, while Chris Migani knocked in a run with an RBI double.

The Bobcats added on to their lead in the eighth as they scored once more to go up 13-8.  The Knights were able to stage a rally in the ninth as they scored twice to cut the lead to 13-10, but it was not enough as the Bobcats earned the victory in game.

Four Knights saw action on the mound in game one.  Senior Mike Strachman started and only lasted 3.2 innings.  He allowed eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits.  He walked four and struck out one.  Freshman Craig Warner (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) (1-2) came in relief and took the loss on the hill, despite pitching fairly well over 2.0 innings.  He allowed one earned run on two hits, while walking one and striking out two.  Junior Zach Kisling (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro Central) and senior Corey Jeffers (Woodbine, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) closed out the game for the Knights.

The Knights crushed Bobcats' starter Michael Oskandy as they scored eight times on ten hits in 5.2 innings.  However, Derek Lamacchia came in relief and shut the door on the Knights over the final 3.2 innings to earn the victory.  He allowed two earned runs in the ninth and gave up only three hits, while walking and striking out three.

Robinson led the Knights' 13-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI's and two runs scored.  Sophomore Matt Holsman (Coral Springs, FL/Stoneman Douglas), Martino, Kresky and Eliasen each had two hits apiece.  Eliasen drove in three runs, while Anderson drove home two.  Dillon, Martino and Kresky each scored twice.

Poletsky and Migani each had three hits and three RBI's to lead the Bobcats' 16-hit attack.

In game two, Quinnipiac jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after the first inning.  The big blow of the inning came off the bat of Migani has he clocked a three-run homer.

The Bobcats extended their lead to 9-0 with a four-run third inning.  All four runs in the inning were unearned.

Holsman scored the Knights' first run in the fourth on a double play.  Anderson scored in the fifth on junior Steven LaForge (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary)'s RBI single, which cut the deficit to 9-2.

Gabe Guerino clubbed a two-run shot in the sixth to put the Bobcats back up nine, 11-2.

Anderson hit a two-run shot in the seventh, his fourth of the season, to score Eliasen and cut the lead to 11-4.  However, it was not nearly enough as the Bobcats earned the sweep.

Freshman Matt Cadigan (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) (0-6) went the distance and took the loss on the hill for the Knights.  He allowed 11 runs on 11 hits.  However, only two runs were earned.  He walked two and struck out four. 

Kyle Birdsall also went the distance for the Bobcats to earn the victory.  He allowed four earned runs on six hits.  He also walked two and struck out four.

LaForge collected two hits and Anderson drove in two runs and scored twice to lead the Knights on offense.

Guerino went 3-for-4 with two RBI's and three runs scored to pace the Bobcats.  Migani added three RBI's.

Both teams resume the series tomorrow as they will once again play a doubleheader in Hamden, CT.  First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
