Softball Swept by Long Island in NEC Doubleheader on Saturday

The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team dropped a Northeast Conference doubleheader at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-0 and 10-2. The Knights are now 11-23 on the season, with a 2-8 mark in league play, while the Blackbirds improve to 24-14 overall and 10-2 in the conference.

In the second game, LIU put a run on the board in the second inning and followed it up with a three-run third inning. Adding two runs in the fourth, they took a 6-0 lead. But the Knights responded with two in the top of the fifth inning to make it a four-run game.  

With one out, Kristen Coughlan (Mount Royal, NJ/Kingsway) singled to the shortstop and Elizabeth Woidt sent a single up the middle. Kirsten Shreve (Kent, WA/Kentwood) doubled to center field to push Coughlan across the plate and Woidt scored on a passed ball.  Woidt finished the game 2-for-2.

But the Blackbirds pulled away with a three-run fifth inning and another run in the sixth to end the game early.

In the first game, LIU scored a run in the third inning, three in the fifth and added two more in the sixth for the 6-0 shutout.

Caitlin Bradac (Garden Grove, CA/Garden Grove) led the Knights; going 2-for-3 a she had the Knights' only two hits of the game.

The Knights are back in action when they host Wagner on Sunday afternoon at FDU Softball Field at 12:00 p.m.
