The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team was defeated Wednesday night, 3-1, by Long Island in a Northeast Conference match in Brooklyn. The Knights won game one, 27-25. However, the home team responded by easily taking games two and three by scores of 25-18 and 25-17 before winning a thrilling game four, 29-27. The Blackbirds swept the season series with the victory and improved to 10-18 (9-5 NEC) on the season. With the loss, the Knights drop to 10-20 (5-9 NEC).
Sophomore Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) led the Knights with her 16th double-double of the season. She smashed 16 kills with an attack percentage of .222, recorded 26 digs, and served three service aces.
Freshman Ashley Norton (Highlands Ranch, CO/Rock Canyon) added a career-high 12 kills. Sophomore Violeta Slabakova (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica) chipped in nine kills and also added three service aces.
Junior Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) picked up her 10th double-double of the season as she paced the Knights with 46 assists and added 20 digs. Junior Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) also had a big night on defense as she recorded 22 digs. Senior Sarah Berkland (Newton, MA/Newton North) led the squad with three block assists.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Moon Township, PA to take on Robert Morris at 1:00 p.m. before concluding the regular season at the same time on Sunday versus Saint Francis (PA) in Loretto, PA.
