Women's Volleyball Nipped by Del State, 3-2

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker to Delaware State University on Friday, Sept. 4 in its first of three contests at the Lafayette College Tournament in Easton, PA.  The Knights (2-4) had three student-athletes record double-doubles, but were unable to complete a late rally.

The Hornets (1-4) fell behind early, 25-23, but then rattled off back-to-back decisions of 28-26 and 25-21.  FDU held strong with a 25-20 margin in the fourth set, but were out-lasted, 21-19, in the determinant game.

Senior outside hitter Ali Philbrick, freshman counterpart Meaghan Wheeler, and sophomore setter Sarah Willey put up a pair of double-figure stat lines.  For sixth-straight match, Wheeler paced Fairleigh Dickinson in kills.

Philbrick went for 14 kills and 11 digs.  Wheeler added 20 kills and 10 digs, while Willey chipped-in 41 assists, 10 digs, two aces, and three block assists.

Freshman outside hitter Violeta Slabakova notched 12 kills, with sophomore libero Kelsey Semler registering 27 digs.  Red-shirt sophomore middle blocker Sarah Berkland finished with two block solos and five block assists.

The Knights play a tandem of matches on Saturday, Sept. 5.  At noon, the face Saint Peter's College on a neutral court, followed by home-standing Lafayette at 4:00 p.m.
