The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking double-overtime loss to Princeton, 2-1, with .8 seconds on the clock on Friday night at the Princeton Tournament. The Knights fall to 2-3 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 4-0.
With 25 seconds remaining in regulation, the Knights were able to battle back and knot the game to force overtime. But the Tigers scored on a penalty kick with 0.8 seconds remaining in the second overtime period for the win.
Josh Walburn started things off in the second period, when he scored in the 45th minute on a header from inside the goal box to put Princeton ahead, 1-0.
Leslie Ayafor (Lauderhill, FL/Manchester Arts) found Dominic Reinold (Wesseling, Germany/Gesamtschule Rodenkirchen) with 89:35 on the clock to tie up the game, as Reinold found the back of the net on a back kick from the ground for his third goal of the season.
With the score tied, 1-1, the two teams battled through two overtimes without a change until Teddy Schenider scored on a penalty kick with under a second remaining to give Princeton the win.
Majdi Zaineh (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) made five saves in between the posts for the Knights, while Sean Lynch earned the win in goal for the Tigers with five saves.
Princeton out-shot FDU, 18-13, while the Knights held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
The Knights wrap up competition at the Princeton Tournament against Cornell on Sunday at noon.
