Baseball Held Off by Quinnipiac in Opener, 1-0

The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team was edged by visiting Quinnipiac University in Teaneck, NJ, Friday, April 24. The Knights (9-24 overall, 4-9 Northeast Conference) had a runner reach third base in the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings but were unable to capitalize.

Junior right-hander Michael Strachman (Roslyn Heights, NY/Roslyn) (Roslyn Heights, NY) and Quinnipiac senior southpaw Chris Gloor (Bay Shore, NY) got the starting nods, dueling for seven strong.  Strachman took the loss amidst turning in a career-high 7.2 innings, sitting down six.  Gloor fanned nine through 7.0 innings to garner his fifth win of the season.

Fairleigh Dickinson left 10 runners aboard despite red-shirt junior first baseman Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay)'s (San Diego, CA) 4-for-4 performance at the plate.  The loss marked the squad's 10th in as many outings.

The Bobcats moved to 11-24 overall and 4-9 in NEC ball games on the strength of one swing.  Junior outfielder Brian Monack (Branford, CT) drove the first pitch he saw with two outs in the sixth inning out of the park.  Other than Monack's round-tripper, no Bobcat advanced past second base until the final frame.  Quinnipiac placed runners on the corners with no outs in ninth, but FDU sophomore righty Spencer Kelly (Rockville, MD/The Bullis School) (Rockville, MD) came on to register back-to-back strikeouts and a fly ball to diffuse the threat.

Knights' sophomore centerfielder Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) (Sarasota, FL) and freshman infielder Mike Eliasen (Swedesboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) (Swedesboro, NJ) worked their way on twice, each going for a hit and a walk.

The series continues, Saturday, April 24 as the teams play a pair of seven inning games at FDU Field starting at noon.
