Softball Picks Up 3-1 Win Against Marist at UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament

The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory against Marist on Saturday morning at the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament, held at UMBC Softball Stadium in Baltimore, MD.

Sophomore Brianne Benedict (Alliance, OH/West Branch) led off with a shot through the left side in the bottom of the first inning. After squaring up to bunt for the first two pitches, with a 2-2 count, junior Justina Augustine (Geneva, NY/Geneva) smacked a home run over the left centerfield fence to plate two runs and give the Knights the lead.

Sophomore Kim Carbaugh (Johnstown, PA/Richland) led off the bottom half of the second inning, smacking the second home run of her career into center field, adding to FDU's lead.

The Knights loaded the bases in the third inning, but were unable to convert the runners as the Marist first baseman caught a line drive off the bat of sophomore Brittany Sheppard (Mahwah, NJ/Paramus Catholic). With two outs, freshman pitcher Caitlin Bradac (Garden Grove, CA/Garden Grove) singled up the middle to start things off before Junior Lindsay Glidden (Peachtree City, GA/Starr's Mill) was hit by a pitch and Carbaugh drew a walk.

The Red Foxes threatened to get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning beginning with Jessie Green's double through the middle, but Bradac was able to work out of the inning.

Marist put a run on the board in the fifth inning, as Melissa Giordano's two-out double began the rally. Mary Beth Pomes' single was followed by a fielding error that plated Giordano. Bradac forced a groundout to second that stranded two and got the Knights out of the inning with a 3-1 advantage.

Bradac pitched seven innings, scattering six hits and striking out six. She allowed no earned runs and walked two.

The Knights will play in the consolation game of the UMBC Tournament at 3:15 p.m.
