The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team threatened to rally in the top of the seventh inning, but fell short to Drexel, 2-0, at the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament. The Knights are now 0-3 at the Tournament and on the season.
In the bottom of second the Dragons were able to get a run across with two outs and the bases loaded, but junior Trina Fields (Norridge, IL/Ridgewood) worked out of the inning, leaving three runners on.
An RBI single from Ashley Bohtelo that fell into right field in the third inning gave the Dragons a 2-0 lead.
The Knights' only hit of the first six innings came in the first at bat of the game, when sophomore Brianne Benedict (Alliance, OH/West Branch) smacked one to the shortstop and beat out the throw for a single.
But FDU's offensive power was sparked in the top of the seventh inning as the Knights staged a rally, started by a one-out single to right field by junior Lindsay Glidden (Peachtree City, GA/Starr's Mill). Pinch-hitter freshman Alexandra Schubert (Maybrook, NY/Valley Central) drove the ball past a diving first baseman to put two runners on for sophomore Brittany Sheppard (Mahwah, NJ/Paramus Catholic).
Sheppard drove a ball to the shortstop and was almost able to beat out the throw to keep the game going. Fields pitched three innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs and striking out three. Freshman Caitlin Bradac (Garden Grove, CA/Garden Grove) didn't allow a hit in three innings of relief.
The Knights complete competition in the five-team field UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament on Sunday, March 8. The day begins with a 9:00 a.m. contest against Marist. There is a championship game for the top two teams at 1:15 p.m. and a consolation game between the third and fourth place teams at 3:15 p.m.
