Princeton Uses Late Goal to Push Past Fairleigh Dickinson Men?s Soccer, 2-1

A late goal from Princeton's Ben Burton gave the Tigers a 2-1 victory over the Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team in the Knights' home opener on Sunday afternoon. The Knights fall to 4-3-0 on the season, while Princeton improves to 2-5-0.

Burton opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when he took a free kick from the right side and found Brandon Busch, who punched it into the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.

Samson Malijani (Lusaka, Zambia, /La Sapienza) scored his third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 60th minute, knotting the game at 1-1.

The contest remained tied until the 84th minute, when Devin Munt's free kick was sent into the huddle in front of the net and Burton tapped it in for the Tigers' win.

Majdi Zaineh (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) started in goal for the Knights, making three saves. Juho Illi (Nastola, Finland/) made four saves between the posts for the Knights, playing the remaining 55:18. Joe Walter made three saves in goal for the Tigers.

Princeton out-shot FDU, 11-8, and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

“It was a game of two halves,” said Head Coach Seth Roland. “They out-played us in the first half and we out-played them in the second half, but we let it slip away at the end. They are a good team and took care of the ball well. It was an exciting game but if we want to win we need to defend better.”

The Knights are back in action on Wednesday, October 1 when they host NJIT at 3:30 p.m.
