The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team defeated Washington in its season opener on Friday, August 29th at the Nike Portland Tournament in Portland, OR.
Washington got on the board first, scoring in the first minute of the match as Brad Keller found Dylan Tucker-Gangnes, who put the ball into the top of the net from six yards out.
In the 36th minute, Sergio Munoz (Linden, NJ/Linden) and Leslie Ayafor (Lauderhill, FL/Manchester Arts) dished the ball out to Paul King (New Castle, England/Monkseaton), who scored in his first game as a Knight. King sank the ball into the upper left hand corner from 12 yards.
With three minutes remaining in regulation, Fabrizio Trezza (Rome, Italy, /Sion) netted the game-winner into the lower right corner of the net off a feed from Christian Vasconez (Quito, Ecuador/Dickinson).
Majdi Zaineh (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) played between the posts for the Knights, making seven saves. Washington out-shot the Knights, 16-6.
"In my 12 years here, it was as gutsy a performance as any FDU team has put in," said Head Coach Seth Roland. "In light of the fact that we played a man down the entire second half, that the referees took away what appeared to be a legitimate goal and that we allowed a goal 45 seconds in, it was an inspiring performance."
The Knights complete competition at the Tournament when they face off against host Portland on Sunday, August 31.
