The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team dropped both games of a twin bill at Quinnipiac University, Saturday, April 12. The Knights slipped to 7-23 overall and 2-5 in the Northeast Conference.
The opener proved a pitcher's duel as FDU senior lefty John O'Hara (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) squared off against junior right-hander Joe Duffy.
O'Hara allowed the Bobcats' (8-18 overall, 3-5 NEC) first hit in the third inning, while junior outfielder Jeff Vincent (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) ? who reached twice on the day and swiped a bag ? also recorded the squad's first hit in the third inning.
In the fifth frame, an RBI single through the right side by sophomore outfielder Brian Monack brought in the game's first run. The ensuing batter, freshman outfielder Ben Farina, grounded out to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead.
The Knights tied the contest in the top half of the sixth, with the first three batters getting on. Senior infielder Luis Rosario (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) singled home freshman first baseman Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) who started the inning with a base on balls. Junior infielder Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay) double, prior to Rosario's base knock, put him in position to score on junior outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic)'s fielder's choice.
O'Hara hurled 6.0 innings, fanning four. Duffy went the distance, allowing three hits.
An error extended the sixth inning, ultimately allowing Quinnipiac to score the game-winning run on a fielder's choice.
Monack went for two hits.
The Bobcats busted out for six runs in the first frame of the nightcap, en route to a 14-4 victory. It was 9-0, before the Knights scored a pair of runs in the fourth, as junior outfielder Brett Lazar (Commack, NY/Commack) and freshman infielder Steven LaForge (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary) registered RBI's.
Fairleigh Dickinson junior righty Ben Green (Plainview, NY/JFK Plainview) was saddled with the loss, working 1.2 innings. QU's sophomore right-hander Todd DeFranceso picked up the win tossing 7.0 innings. Senior righty Eric Bretscher added 2.0 innings of scoreless relief.
Freshman Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) was the lone Knight to go for multiple hits, reaching base on three occasions. Conversely, four Bobcats logged multi-hit efforts, led by four hits by both Farina and freshman outfielder Bryn Doyle.
The Knights take on home-standing St. Peter's College at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 16 in Jersey City, NJ. The two teams met in FDU's first weekend of action, with the Peacocks taking both contests.
