The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team battled to a double-overtime 1-1 tie with host Central Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon in New Britain, CT, each team netting one goal in the second half. The Knights are now 7-3-2 overall, with a 2-0-1 mark in Northeast Conference action, while the Blue Devils are 6-5-2 overall, including a 0-3-1 record in league play.
Central Connecticut scored the first goal of the game as Persis Oware sent a cross over to Eddie Floyd, who fired it in for a 1-0 lead. The Knights didn't trail for long, as Samson Malijani (Lusaka, Zambia, /La Sapienza) found the back of the net ten minutes later. There was a CCSU deflection 10 yards out and Malijani went one-on-one with the goalkeeper for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.
The two teams battled it out through two overtimes, but the score would remain knotted. Central Connecticut took two shots in the second overtime, while FDU wasn't able to create any scoring opportunities in the extra frames. The Blue Devils out-shot the Knights, 30-13.
Majdi Zaineh (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) made nine saves in goal for the Knights. Paul Armstrong made six saves between the posts for CCSU.
"We played a very inspired Central Connecticut team who was very much on their game," said Head Coach Seth Roland. "We were not at our sharpest, but Central certainly had something to do with that. I'm proud of how we grinded out a draw in a difficult away NEC match."
The Knights are back in action on Friday, Oct. 24 when they host Saint Francis PA at 3:30 p.m.
