The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team was victorious, 2-0, Wednesday, Oct. 1 in Teaneck NJ versus the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Amidst a four-game homestand ? and their second match at University Field overall ? the Knights used a pair of first half goals separated by 1:05 to improve to 5-3.
In his first Division I start, FDU junior goalkeeper Carl Spence (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Meadowbrook) (St. Catherine, Jamaica) stepped-up to make six stops through 90 minutes. With Spence headlining shutout, the Knights ultimately surpassed a tandem of totals from the 2007 campaign; bringing their cumulative goal and win counts to 17 and five, respectively. (A year ago, Fairleigh Dickinson tallied 16 goals and four victories).
Midfielder Fernando Bo Huthmacher (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Da Lagoa) (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) accounted for the game-winner in the 24th minute, recording an assisted scoring strike. The junior locked in a Highlanders' (1-7-1) clearance effort at the top of the box, then buried the ball in the upper right corner. The marker proved Huthmacher's second game-winner of the season.
“I thought we played well today ? defensively and at attack,” Head Coach Seth Roland said. “It's nice to get back in the win column.”
Junior forward Samson Malijani (Lusaka, Zambia, /La Sapienza) (Lusaka, Zambia) provided a 2-0 cushion, capitalizing on a feed from junior midfielder Serge Zulu (Longueuil, Quebec/College Francais) (Longueuil, Quebec). Malijani's fourth goal of the season was finished lower left, following Zulu's square ball.
NJIT senior goalkeeper Josh Osit (Somerset, NJ) registered six saves in the loss.
