Softball Edged by Quinnipiac in Sunday's Doubleheader, 4-3 and 9-1

The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team had its comeback foiled, edged by visiting Quinnipiac, 4-3, in the first game of a doubleheader at FDU Softball Field on Sunday, April 29. In the nightcap, the Knights fell, 9-1. The Bobcats improve to 18-22 overall and 12-6 in Northeast Conference play.

The Bobcats' first batter, Krista Seeman, shot one over the fence to leadoff the game and give QU the early 1-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Ashley Buchanan (West Windsor, NY/West Windsor) worked her way out of a jam, forcing the batter to fly out in foul territory before striking out the final out of the inning to escape with only one run on the board.

Quinnipiac put two more on the scoreboard in the second inning as Kelly Wall sent a single down the left line and Seeman belted her second home run in as many innings.

In the third inning, Meghan Doherty (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) led off with a double to the right field fence, was advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jennifer Boldman (Winter Haven, FL/Winter Haven) and plated on a Justina Augustine single up the middle.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Bobcats extended their lead to 4-1 as Christina Bordeau led off with a double and stole home as a runner was thrown out at first.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Knights rallied to come back as Shauna Hawthorne (Largo, FL/Seminole) and Doherty were patient at the plate, drawing back-to-back walks. Augustine pushed two runs across the plate with a one-out double to left center field to make it a one-run game, 4-3.

With two strikes in the first inning, leadoff hitter Dana Myers (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) belted a long ball over the centerfield fence to put the Knights up, 1-0.

QU posted a six-run second inning, with RBI walks from Jenna Henry and Seeman and an RBI single through the right side from Kristin Sheriff.  Angela Casella grounded out to the second baseman to plate Henry and Katie Allendorfer shot a two-run double to center field to push Wall and Seeman across the plate.

Quinnipiac took a 7-1 lead as in the top of the third when Bordeau sent one over the fence. In the sixth inning, Emily Bellush used an RBI single to plate pinch runner Maria Browne and Bordeau had a single down the left line to score Seeman, making the final 9-1.

The Knights end their season with a 7-32 overall record, including a 2-14 mark in league play.
