The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team fell to visiting St. John's in a doubleheader at the FDU Softball Field in Hackensack, NJ on Thursday, April 19. The Knights fell 15-4 in the first game and 9-1 in the second game, falling to 6-22 on the year, while St. John's improves to 14-29.
The Red Storm got on the board in the first inning of the first game as Tami Hill walked to start the inning and Loren Anguiano belted a home run over the centerfield fence for a 2-0 lead. St. John's tacked on another run as Roxann Struble hit a single to get on base, was advanced by a hit from Brandy Reyes and scored on Danielle Estrada's double. Bionka King had a two-run double, Halladay added an RBI single, Struble shot an RBI single and Estrada had a two-run double to center field to give the Red Storm an 11-0 inning to start the game.
With one on and one out, Lindsay Glidden, Dana Myers (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) and Hope Hilman (Bremerton, WA/Olympic) turned a double play to get out of the second inning without a run scored.
A single up the middle from Struble in the third inning gave the Red Storm a pair of runs and Estrada had a groundout to plate Struble and give St. John's a 14-0 advantage.
The Knights got on the board in the fourth inning as Ali Keltos (Shelton, CT/Lauralton Hall) and Hilman drew walks to lead off. Caitlyn Reuter (Richwood, NJ/Clearview Regional) plated Keltos with a double to center field.
With one out, Jaime Colvin (Fawn Grove, PA/Kennard-Dale) drew a walk to load the bases for Kristin Coughlan, smacked a hard shot down the left line to score Hilman, Reuter and Colvin.
With two on in the fifth inning, the combination of Glidden, Myers and Hilman turned a double play to clear the bases, but Reyes responded with a home run to give the Red Storm the 15-4 edge.
Anguiano and Struble had back-to-back home runs to start off the second game as Anguiano knocked the ball over the left field fence and Struble followed it over the centerfield fence in the top of the first inning. Reyes then hit a single and was plated by Harris. King knocked in two more to give St. John's a 5-0 lead entering into the bottom half of the inning.
In the second inning, Anguiano and Struble repeated the feat, hitting back-to-back shots over the fence for the second consecutive inning. The Red Storm added two more for the 9-0 lead after two innings.
Myers got the Knights on the board in the fifth inning when she hit a shot into left center field for her second home run of the season.
The Knights are back in action when they host Long Island University in a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Friday, April 20 at 3:00 p.m.
