The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team opened its conference season with a doubleheader sweep of host Saint Francis PA on Saturday afternoon. The Knights won in the first game, 3-2, in eight innings and took the second contest, 5-3.
SFPA took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double. FDU tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a home run by Lindsay Glidden and then took the lead on another solo shot from Dana Myers (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman). St. Francis PA's Kelly Cortese scored as a pinch runner after a fielder's choice to knot the score.
The Red Flash and Knights were knotted, 2-2, in the bottom of the sixth inning. A single, a fielder's choice and then another single loaded the bases with one out in the eighth inning for FDU and Glidden was hit for the Knights' 3-2 win.
"I think in the later innings, we executed our defensive plays well," said Interim Head Coach Tammy Evans. "We made smarter decisions. Our pitching staff did a great job. It was really a team effort."
In the second game of the day, FDU got on the board first, as Glidden smacked an RBI double. Hope Hilman (Bremerton, WA/Olympic)'s RBI single in the fifth inning gave the Knights a 2-0 lead.
After the Red Flash scored a pair in the bottom fo the sixth, it was a tie game entering the seventh inning. The Knights scored three runs in the top of the inning to take the lead. The Red Flash responded with one run, but the Knights got out of the inning with the win. "We made smart decisons to play for outs," said Evans.
Myers was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Glidden went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
