The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's volleyball team (1-0) defeated Iona, 3-1, on Wednesday evening in the Knights' season opener. After dropping the first game, 30-28, the Knights swept the next three games (30-25, 30-24, 30-21) to take the match. The Gaels fall to 1-3 on the season.
Elena Schmidt (/Nevada Union) led the team with 20 kills, four aces and 18 digs. Lauren Lombardo (/Laurel) notched 30 digs and Jennifer Brugger (/Centreville) recorded 15 digs. Megan Philbrick (/Elizabeth Seton) added 14 kills. Ruth Levy (/Cary) dished out a team-high 38 set assists while Karolina Kowalski (/North Arlington) added 16 assists. Lauren Boothby (/Voorhees) led the defense with eight blocks.
Megan Dailey led Iona with 16 kills and 12 digs, while Sarah Wiener posted 14 kills and Beth Holly had 41 assists.
The Knights are back in action at the George Washington Tournament on Saturday-Sunday, September 2-3. FDU will face Loyola and George Washington on Saturday and match up against Coppin State on Sunday.
