April 2, 2006

Box Score

HACKENSACK, NJ - The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team fell to the visiting Robert Morris Colonials in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at FDU Softball Field. FDU fell 5-0 in the first game, but bounced back to tie up the second, 1-1, on aggressive base running, pushing the game into extra innings, but eventually falling, 4-1. The Knights fall to 3-26 on the season, including a 1-3 mark in Northeast Conference play, while RMU improves to 10-8 overall, with a 4-0 record in league action.

The Colonials opened scoring in the second game, as Keri Meyer (Carnegie, PA) had a double to right field in the first inning to get on base and Kali Byers' (Alum Bank, PA) RBI double to right center sent her across the plate for a 1-0 lead.

Erin Mills (Wilmington, DE) was able to get the Knights back in the game, stealing home to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Meghan Doherty (Binghamton, NY) singled to start the rally. Mills, who was in as a pinch runner, advanced to second on a groundout and moved to third when Caitlin Bolduc (Mystic, CT) singled to right center. Mills forced a throw from the catcher and flew home, sliding in to knot the score. With two outs and a full count, Jennifer Whitley (/Carle Place)'s patience drew a walk to load the bases, but the Knights were unable to push any runs across for the lead.

The game remained tied until the ninth inning, when Jill Dorsch (Sewickley, PA) walked and Danielle Cohen (Marlton, NJ) used a sacrifice bunt to move her as Dorsch raced to third. Susan Perich (Center, PA) singled to left field to score the RBI and give the Colonials the 2-1 lead. An RBI triple from Lauren Nisivoccia (Nutley, NJ) and an RBI single from Jill Spargo (Warren, PA) added insurance runs to make the final 4-1.

Cohen was credited with both wins on the day, improving her to 4-4 on the season.

The Colonials were the first to post runs on the board in the first game with a pair in the top of the third inning as started off with a single. Ashlee Smith (Mechanicsville, VA) and Dorsch had back-to-back RBI singles to plate Spargo and Meyer and give RMU the lead.

In the fifth inning, Meyer led off with a single and Smith went over the centerfield fence for her first home run of the season to make it 4-0. The final run scored as a groundout from Perich plated Nisivoccia in the seventh inning to make it 5-0.

Cohen pitched a complete game for Robert Morris, striking out eight en route to a one-hitter.

Hope Hilman (Bremerton, WA) singled to the right side in the fifth inning to break up the no-hitter.

The Knights are back in action on Tuesday, April 4, when they host La Salle in a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m.
