The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team was edged in a doubleheader at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY on Tuesday, April 18 as the Blackbirds defeated the Knights, 2-0 in the first game and 3-1 in the nightcap. The Knights fall to 4-36 overall with a 2-11 mark in the Northeast Conference, while the Blackbirds improve to 23-19 and 10-2 in league play.
The Blackbirds broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning as Krystal Mejia singled up the middle to plate Randi Gillespie.
In the sixth inning, LIU tacked on an insurance run as Gillespie smacked a two-out single to center field to push Leah Glenn across the plate.
Ashley Buchanan (West Windsor, NY/West Windsor) pitched a complete game for the Knights, scattering seven hits and striking out two. Caitlyn Reuter (Richwood, NJ/Clearview Regional) was 2-for-3 to lead the Knights offensively.
Jenny Giles was credited with the win for LIU, allowing seven hits in seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts.
In the second game, Fairleigh Dickinson took the opportunity to open scoring in the third inning. Stephanie Cahill (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) drove in a run with a single to right field, scoring Jennifer Whitley (/Carle Place), who reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.
The Blackbirds responded with a three-run fourth inning to shut the door, led by Holly Erwin's RBI double to right center.
Jessica Busick took the win, scattering five hits in seven innings, allowing one earned run with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Nicole Webb (/Manchester Township), on the mound for the Knights, allowed six hits in six innings with two earned runs and three strikeouts, while walking none.
Reuter went 2-for-3 again to finish the day 4-for-6.
The Knights are back in action on Thursday, April 20 when they host St. Francis NY in a conference doubleheader, starting at 4:00 p.m.
