The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team split a conference doubleheader at Central Connecticut on Saturday, winning the first game 5-3 but falling in the second, 4-2. Central improves to 3-29 on the season and 1-9 in the NEC, while the Knights are 4-34 overall and 2-9 in conference play.
The first game remained scoreless until the Knights put two runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Ali Keltos started the rally off with a one-out walk and Nicole Webb advanced her with a sacrifice bunt. Jennifer Whitley smacked a two-run double to plate Keltos and Stephanie Cahill, who singled to get on base.
Central came back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs when Deb Munson hit an RBI double to score Melissa Pelletier and Munson scored on an RBI single by Pam Shifrin.
FDU broke the 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh, putting up three runs on three hits. Chaill singled, Whitley reached on a fielder's choice and KC Hallgren singled to start things off. Caitlyn Reuter doubled to center field to plate three runs.
The Blue Devils tried to rally in the bottom of the inning when Ali Brander scored on an RBI double by Alison Rossi, but it wasn't enough as the Knights earned the 5-3 win.
Cahill finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Hallgren was 2-for-4.
Ashley Buchanan pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing only three hits. Webb finished the game, scattering five hits, with one earned run and one strikeout.
Central came back in the second game of the day, putting up a run in the first inning as Kristin Kropp scored on a RBI double by Pelletier.
The Blue Devils added two more runs in the third inning when Munson singled and scored on a two-run homerun by Shfirin.
FDU cut the Blue Devils' lead to only one run, 3-2, scoring two runs in the fifth inning. Whitley singled and Reuter drove a two-out, two-run home run, her third of the season.
Munson gave the Blue Devils back the two run lead by scoring Kropp who had beat out an infield single. Brittany Salvatore picked up the win working five innings and Samantha Keltos picked up the save.
The Knights are back in action at Long Island University on Tuesday, April 18 at 3:00 p.m.
