The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team (9-3-4, 6-0-2 NEC) battled to a 0-0 double-overtime draw with Monmouth University (11-3-3, 6-0-2 NEC) on Friday afternoon, leaving the two teams tied for first place in the Northeast Conference.
In an evenly played match, the Hawks held a 10-9 edge in shots, while each netmider made four saves to preserve shutouts. Daniel Schenkel's blanking was his tenth of the year and Elvir Prasovic (Astoria, NY/Newcomers) earned his sixth shutout between the posts for the Knights.
The 110-minute game was an intense and physical one, with eight cards and 42 fouls called between the two teams.
With 32:00 left in regulation, FDU's Fabrizio Trezza (Rome, Italy, /Sion) found Samson Malijani (Lusaka, Zambia, /La Sapienza) in the box, whose shot was blocked out for a corner kick by Monmouth's Brent Bauer. On the ensuing corner kick service Donny Mayard (/Leblanc)'s header was stopped on a diving save by Schenkel.
Eight minutes later, Monmouth nearly broke the scoreless tie, as Tom Gray sent in a corner kick to the far post, which sophomore Angelo Amato nodded to junior Damon Wilson. Wilson's shot on goal was denied by Prasovic, who turned in his own diving stop.
The Knights will look to capture home-field advantage in the NEC Tournament on Sunday afternoon when they close out the regular season at Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD.
