TEANECK, NJ -
Senior Nadav Gottesman (Haifa, Israel) netted the game-winning goal in double-overtime against visiting Columbia to give the No. 10 Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon at University Stadium. The Knights remain undefeated with an overall record of 6-0-1, while the Lions fall to 3-6 on the year.
Gottesman executed a give-and-go with sophomore Yannick Rome (/Polyvalente Armand Racicot) Gosselin (St. Jean sur Richelieu/Polyvalente), blasting the ball from 16 yards out, finding the bottom right corner of the net to give the Knights the win.
Gottesman's goal came after 104 minutes of a physical battle. The game, televised live on CN8, featured 37 fouls. The Knights out-shot the Lions, 13-9 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Tomer Chencinski (Toronto, Canada) earned his second shutout of the season for the Knights, making two saves. Junior Alex Maffeo (Morristown, NJ) was between the posts for the Lions, grabbing two saves.
"It was a good, hard-fought win against a very athletic and difficult Columbia team," said Head Coach Seth Roland.
"The guys carried on after Max [Squarcia] got hurt and found a way to win," said Roland. "Max was playing very well and his injury puts a bit of a damper on things. But I'm proud of the way we kept our focus throughout the game and it certainly took a total team effort to come up with the victory."
The Knights are back in action at Yale on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
