BROOKLYN, NY -
Freshman midfielder Alejandro Bedova scored twice to lift Fairleigh Dickinson to a 2-1 win over Long Island on Friday evening at LIU Field in collegiate men's soccer action.
Freshman Ryan Vignona tallied LIU's lone goal. The Blackbirds fall to 4-6-1, 1-2-1 NEC while the Knights improve to 9-4-1, 2-3 NEC.
Bedoya opened scoring eight minutes into the game, taking a pass from Pino Tubito and punching the ball into the upper right corner from eight yards out. The freshman added insurance four minutes later when Turbito pushed the ball ahead to him on the right side. Bedoya slipped it past LIU goalkeeper Alex Fatovic for the 2-0 lead.
LIU got on the board three minutes before the half when sophomore Szymon Hryszcayk took a pass just inside the box on the right side. He slipped the ball into traffic in front of the goal, finding the foot of Vignona for his second score of the year.
With FDU holding a 2-1 lead, the second half was marred by extremely physical play. Six yellow and two red cards were handed out in the final 45 minutes.
LIU had a number of opportunities with its best shot to tie the contest coming in the waning seconds, but sophomore Ryan Vanderkin's attempt sailed high.
The Blackbirds posted a 12-7 shot advantage, including a 7-3 differential in the second stanza. Fatovic registered one save and Knights netminder Elvir Prasovic turned away six attempts.
"It was an important, hard-fought victory for us," said Head Coach Seth Roland. "I'm pleased with how well we competed."
The Knights will take the field again at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23 when they play St. Francis NY in Jamaica, NY at Belson Stadium on the St. John's University campus.
