Men’s soccer standout Anders Vest-Hansen had a week to remember on the pitch last week, as the junior connected for not one, but two golden-goal penalty kicks for the Knights last week en route to being named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week, the BigAppleSoccer.com Player of the Week and to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Vest-Hansen received two opportunities to shine under pressure last week, and the Danish-born midfielder sparkled on both occasions. His two extra time goals, both of which came on penalty kicks, lifted the Knights to victories over No. 14 St. John's and Siena.
Vest-Hansen tallied three points in the victory over the Big East member Red Storm. In what was a rematch of last year's NCAA Division I Tournament first-round meeting, the third-year Knight assisted on the Nico Wright goal that broke a scoreless tie in the 72nd minute. St. John's found the equalizer in the 87th minute, but that tally set the stage for more Vest-Hansen heroics. When FDU earned a penalty kick in the seventh minute of overtime, Vest-Hansen stepped up to the spot and sent the Knights to their second straight win over the Red Storm.
Later in the week, FDU fell into a 2-0 hole at Siena, but the Knights survived the Saints' upset bid thanks to Vest-Hansen's game-winner. With 1:34 remaining in the second overtime, the Knights drew a foul in the box and let their Danish midfielder do the rest.
