Freshman Markus Sjoberg clinched the win for the Knights in dramatic fashion, as FDU won its 12th overall and second-straight Northeast Conference Championship, earning the conference's automatic NCAA Tournament bid after defeating top-seeded Bryant, 4-3.
The NEC title and an NCAA berth came down to the match at No. 6 with Sjoberg and Joshua Rubenstein. Rubenstein took the first set, 6-2, before Sjoberg bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second set. In the title-deciding third set, Sjoberg was cool under the pressure and rolled to a 6-2 victory to give FDU the match and the championship.
Against Quinnipiac in the semifinals, the Knights extended their lead to 2-0 when Sjoberg won in straight sets over Alex Lazerowich, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6. However, the next three matches were decided in three sets. FDU eventually won the match, 4-0, to advance to the finals against Bryant.
