HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team will welcome three additions to the program for the 2013-14 season, Head Coach
Greg Herenda announced Tuesday. Joining the roster in the fall will be
Mike Owona, Jayde Dawson and
Scott Kingsley.
“I am very excited about the start of my first recruiting class at FDU,” Herenda said. “These three young men are quality students and players, who immediately add depth and talent to our program. To receive these three commitments so quickly after taking the job was a very pleasant surprise.”
Owona is a 6-9, 245-pound forward from Baltimore, Md. The John Carroll School (Bel Air, Md.) product is a native of Cameroon, Africa and received All-County accolades at JCS after averaging double digits in points and rebounds per game. He played AAU basketball for Baltimore Elite and intends to major in engineering at FDU.
“Mike immediately brings a physical presence to our program,” Herenda said. “He is big and strong and has a tremendous upside. Mike, like all of our new student-athletes, comes from a great program and has received great coaching.”
Dawson is a 6-2, 185-pound guard from Montreal, Quebec and has attended Brooks School (North Andover, Mass.) over the last two years, where he was named the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Class B Player of the Year in 2013. During his senior season, Dawson averaged nearly 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals per game en route to being named First Team All-ISL (Independent School League) and First Team All-NEPSAC. He also played AAU basketball for QC-United in Montreal and for the Albany City Rocks and plans to major in business at FDU.
“Jayde is a very physical and athletic guard who can guard a number of positions and is very talented offensively,” Herenda said. “He has a high level skill set and plays very well with and without the ball. Jayde will fit right into our up-tempo system.”
Kingsley is a 6-5, 190-pound guard from Chicago, who attended St. Rita of Cascia High School during his senior year after a three-year stint at Whitney Young Magnet High School. At St. Rita, he averaged 13 points, four rebounds and three assists per game while being selected to the All-Chicago Catholic League North Section Team and to the Catholic League All-Star Game. Kingsley was also a member of Silver Honors for achieving a grade point average above 3.5. He played his AAU basketball for the Chicago Mustangs and plans to major in education at FDU.
“Scott is known for his ability to shoot the basketball, but he also possesses a great feel for how to play the game,” Herenda said. “He will be able to stretch our opponents' defense and is sneaky quick and athletic to the basket. Scott has a great dose of “old school” in his game."
This is the first wave of recruits to sign in this recruiting class, with more expected to commit in the near future.
