Former NCAA fencing champion, Alex Delaney was named the head coach of the fencing program beginning August 1, 2020. Prior to becoming the head coach, Delaney spent the previous 6 seasons as an assistant coach for the Knights.
In his time at FDU, Delaney has helped coach numerous fencers who have reached Regionals, including Natalia Toby who reached Regionals all four years on campus. In 2019, the Knights sent four athletes to Regionals and in 2016 and 2017, the Knights had members reach the NCAA Championships.
The Maplewood, N.J. native won the 2008 National Championship as a member of the Ohio State men’s fencing team.
The Columbia High School product is a NJ-State Championship Medalist. He has won numerous local and regional events as well as competed at the national level.
As a coach, he has worked with many high school programs including stints as an assistant coach at both Don Bosco Prep and Montclair Kimberley Academy in 2010-11. Following that year, Delaney was named head coach at Livingston High School. In his first season of his four-year tenure, the women’s fencing team earned the Santelli Title. The Lancers also tabbed three consecutive Final Four appearances.
"I’m excited about the opportunity to be coaching at the college level,” Delaney said. “I've followed the program on the outside for years so it is amazing to finally be a part of it and help the team excel in any way that I can."
