James McGuire enters his first season as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Fairleigh Dickinson. McGuire comes to FDU after spending the last two seasons as the head coach at Elmira College (N.Y.).Â
At Elmira, McGuire led the women's team to the Empire 8 Conference Tournament in both seasons. Guided the women's team to its best regular season conference records in both 2013 and 2014. Directed the men's team an above .500 finish in both 2013 and 2014 for the first time in 13 years. Across both teams, coached 14 All-Conference performers in his two years at the helm. The 2013-14 women's team earned Empire 8 All-Academic team honors with a 3.44 team GPA.Â
Prior to Elmira, McGuire was an assistant coach at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) for one season. There he organized the team practice schedule, developed drills, offseason weight program that were tennis specific and implemented a new recruiting strategy. The new strategy led to seven freshman for the 2012 season and doubled the number of incoming freshman over the previous season.
McGuire also spent one season a volunteer assistant coach at Western Illinois in 2011. In the summers of 2007-2012, McGuire was a tennis instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy and the Tennis Club of Rochester. He was also an instructor at the Turin Tennis Club in Rochester from 2005-2009.Â
McGuire competed at the Division I level at both the University of Rhode Island and Western Illinois. McGuire competed for URI from 2006 to 2008 where he led the Rams in singles wins in 2006 and helped the team achieve its highest national ranking in 2008. McGuire then finished his career at Western Illinois from 2009 to 2010. He was voted team captain in 2010, while competiting at number six singles and number one doubles, and was the recipient of the Art Peterson Leadership Award (2010) and the Fighter First Award (2009).Â
McGuire earned his bacelor's degree in Journalism from Western Illinois in 2011.Â
