WELCOME

Dear Friends of FDU Knights Athletic Programs,

We are very proud of our athletic programs at Fairleigh Dickinson University.  Our coaches and student-athletes are working very hard to achieve success both in the classroom and on the playing fields.

We are dedicated to reaching this success with the highest standard of ethical conduct and integrity.  To do so, we need the cooperation and effort of all coaches, staff, players and YOU!  As alums, friends and fans, you are considered representatives of the University and certain NCAA rules then affect you.

The paragraphs that follow are meant to provide you with the opportunity to become familiar with these NCAA rules.  Should any violation occur whether it is intentional or unintentional, FDU will be held accountable.  We appreciate your support, encouragement and loyalty and ask that you take the time to read through this information.

If you know a young person with athletic talent who might want to attend FDU, please contact the appropriate FDU coaching staff member.  Additionally, if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me at 201-692-2255.

Who is a "Prospective Student-Athlete"?
A "Prospective Student-Athlete," known as a PSA, is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade.  In addition, any younger student-athlete who receives any benefits from the institution would be considered a PSA.  Student-athletes enrolled in preparatory schools or two-year colleges are also considered prospective student-athletes.

Who is a "Representative of Athletic Interests?" (BOOSTER)
YOU ARE IF:

* You have ever been a member of the Knights of the Roundtable or any of the "Friends" groups which support specific athletic teams.
* You have ever made financial contributions to the athletic program or booster clubs of Fairleigh Dickinson University.
* You have ever assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families or helped to arrange employment of enrolled student-athletes.
* You have ever promoted the athletic program at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
* You have ever been involved with the Fairleigh Dickinson University athletic program.
According to NCAA rules, once an individual has been identified as an institutional "representative of athletic interests" the individual retains that title for life.

Who is able to recruit for Fairleigh Dickinson University?
* Only FDU coaches may be involved in the recruitment process for a sport.  Boosters may not have any contact.  This includes letters, e-mails, telephone calls, or face-to-face contact on or off the campus.
* You may be of assistance by forwarding all information on prospective student-athletes to the appropriate coaches.
* You may, as a "rep", continue to maintain friendships developed previously even when it may involve a PSA.  You may not encourage the PSA to attend Fairleigh Dickinson University or provide extra benefits.

NCAA Rules Regarding Contact with High School and Junior College Coaches
* You may not contact the prospect's coach, principal or counselor for the purpose of evaluating the prospect.  You are NOT permitted to pick up films or transcripts from the prospect's educational institution.
* You may attend a prospect's games or contests on your own initiative but still may not contact the prospects on these occasions.
* You may not entertain high school, prep school or junior college COACHES at ANY location.
* You may not provide tickets or transportation for high school, prep school or junior college COACHES at any location. Only the Division of Athletics may provide complimentary admissions and only to home athletic events for those coaches.

Permissible Activities by a Representative of Athletic Interests in Regards to a Prospective Student-Athlete
* You may attend high school and junior college athletic events.
* You may continue established family relationships with friends and neighbors. Contacts with sons or daughters of these families certainly are permitted as long as they are not made for recruiting purposes and are not initiated by FDU's coaching staff members.
* You are permitted to play "pick up" basketball or softball games, continue neighborhood picnics or backyard barbecues and engage in your normal activities with prospects and their parents who are family friends.  Again, you simply are not permitted to attempt to recruit the prospect or discuss the athletic program.
* You may attend a public event (e.g. a high school awards banquet or dinner) at which prospects are in attendance. No attempt should be made to recruit the prospect.
* You may send to the FDU coaching staff any newspaper clippings or other information about prospects which you think would be of interest.  Your assistance in this way is very helpful.  The coaching staff will then make the contact with the prospect.

NCAA Rules Regarding Contacts with Currently Enrolled Student-Athletes
* You may not provide a student-athlete any benefits or special arrangements.
* You may not provide room and/or board of any type of transportation for a student-athlete with eligibility remaining.
* You may not expend funds to entertain student-athletes, their friends or relatives. You are not even permitted to buy a soda or a cup of coffee for them.
* You may not use the name or picture of an enrolled student-athlete to directly advertise, recommend or promote sales or use of a commercial product or service of any kind.
* You may not entertain high school, prep school or junior college COACHES at ANY location.
* You may not provide tickets or transportation for high school, prep school or junior college COACHES AT ANY LOCATION.  Only the Division of Athletics can provide complimentary admissions and only to home athletic events for those coaches.
* You may not contact the prospect's coach, principal or counselor for the purpose of evaluating the prospect.  You are NOT permitted to pick up films or transcripts from the prospect's educational institution.
* You may not provide awards or gifts directly to a student-athlete for his or her athletic performance. All awards financed by "representatives of athletic interests" must first be approved by Fairleigh Dickinson University and meet NCAA award regulations.
* You may not provide an honorarium to a student-athlete for a speaking engagement. All speaking engagements must be approved in advance by the Division of Athletics.
* You may not allow a student-athlete, his or her friends or relatives to use your telephone to make free calls.
