HACKENSACK, N.J. – FDU softball finished a mid-week NEC series with New Haven on Wednesday afternoon, dropping two in a three-game set.
FDU sent right-hander
Jamie Sencion out to start game one of a Tuesday doubleheader. Sencion was absolutely sensational in a 5-0 win for FDU. The sophomore allowed just two hits across seven scoreless innings, striking out three Chargers in the process. Sencion was helped out by a solid day at the plate for the FDU offense. The Knights' five runs came on ten hits.
Zoe Milonopoulos led the way for FDU, going 2-3 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs.
The Knights kept the bats hot to start off game two of the Tuesday doubleheader. FDU plated three runs in the second inning to take an early lead, behind a two-run single from
Rebecca Merkes, and an RBI single out of
Madison Rishel.
Zoe Milonopoulos also stayed hot with an RBI double in the third. FDU lead 4-1 heading into the fourth inning, when the New Haven offense woke up for the first time. The Chargers scored four runs in the frame, chasing FDU starter
Madison Dollard from the game and giving the visitors a 5-4 lead. FDU punched back in the bottom of the fifth, when
Kailee O'Sullivan laced a two-run double to give the Knights a 6-5 lead. FDU would go on to the seventh inning leading 6-5, but could not shut the door on New Haven. Down to their last strike, the Chargers rallied, plating four runs to take the lead back. FDU could not answer in the bottom of the seventh, resulting in a 9-6 loss.
The Knights looked to bounce back from the tough Tuesday loss in a Wednesday afternoon bout with the Chargers. The Knights would take a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning, after an RBI double by
Ayden Stone. The Knights sat on the 3-2 lead until the seventh inning, where New Haven got scrappy yet again. Down to their final two outs this time, the Chargers again rallied, scoring three runs to take a late lead. FDU went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving New Haven a 5-3 victory.
The Knights travel up to Erie, Pa. to take on Mercyhurst in a weekend NEC series. FDU and Mercyhurst will play a Saturday doubleheader on April 11 starting at 1 p.m. Coverage will be available on NEC Front Row.
