JERSEY CITY, N.J. – FDU softball picked up a doubleheader sweep over Saint Peter's on Thursday afternoon.
The Knights started off their Thursday doubleheader red-hot. FDU immediately jumped on the board in the first inning, plating three runs to take an early lead. FDU built on that lead in the second, as
Ayden Stone drove home two runs on a double to left field.
Dimitra Milonopoulos helped add to the offense in the third, hitting an RBI single. Things came to a head for FDU in the fourth inning. The Knights put together a monster frame, batting around and scoring eight runs in the fourth to crack the game open. The Knights would add three extra runs in the fifth inning to cap off the offensive firepower. Freshman
Cheri LeDoux picked up her first career hit in the fifth, lacing a two-run single to right field. On the pitching end for FDU,
Jamie Sencion shut down the Peacock bats. Sencion twirled four shutout innings for the Knights, striking out four batters, and giving up just three hits. Sencion was relieved by
MaryJane Limon, who shut down the Peacocks in a 1-2-3 inning to wrap up an 18-0 win for the Knights in five innings. Ten different Knights would record hits in the win, and nine different Knights picked up an RBI.
FDU again jumped out early in game two of the doubleheader.
Rebecca Merkes stole home in the first inning to give FDU an early 1-0 lead.
Ayden Stone hit a sac fly in the third inning to help pad the advantage for FDU. In the third, freshman
Amanda Jupinka stayed red-hot, hitting her second home run of the week, a solo shot to make it 3-0 FDU. The 3-0 score would hold until the sixth inning, when Saint Peter's would get on the board for the first time all day on a sacrifice bunt. The Knights added some insurance in the seventh inning as two runs scored on a Peacocks throwing error. FDU freshman pitcher
Addison Makowski was excellent in game two of the doubleheader, going six innings, and allowing just two runs to the Saint Peter's bats. The Peacocks would threaten in the seventh inning, bringing the tying run up to the plate. However,
MaryJane Limon again came in to slam the door, giving the Knights a 5-3 victory.
FDU returns home for a weekend NEC series against LIU. The Knights and Sharks will face off in a Saturday doubleheader in Hackensack, with first pitch at 1 p.m. Coverage will be available on NEC Front Row.
