CCSU Wins a 1-0 Pitchers' Duel on Sunday

HACKENSACK, N.J. – FDU softball (17-16, 9-3) dropped the final game of their weekend series against CCSU (13-21, 8-4) on Sunday afternoon by a score of 1-0.

The game was initially impact by some rainy weather in the Hackensack area. The original first pitch time of 12:00 p.m. was moved to 1:30 p.m. and later 3:00 p.m. due to wet field conditions.

Once the game got underway, a pitchers' duel ensued. The Knights sent their star Brooklyn Shroyer out to the circle against CCSU's Liz Hamilton. Both pitchers were stellar, each taking a shutout into the sixth inning, with offense hard to come by from both sides.

FDU was the first team to bend and break in the duel, as in the top of the sixth, Shroyer allowed a leadoff single to CCSU's Ashley Viesta. Two batters later, Shroyer allowed an RBI double to KC Machado, putting the Blue Devils on the board. Julia Swan would enter the game in relief of Shroyer, and escaped the jam without further damage.

The Knights had a prime opportunity to get back into the game in the bottom half of the sixth. With runners on first and second and one out, Ayden Stone stepped up to the dish in a big spot. Stone gave a ball a ride out to deep left field, where she was robbed of extra bases by CCSU's Abby Meehan, who made a spectacular leaping grab. Angela Costa then popped up to third base, ending the threat.

The Knights were able to put a runner on in the seventh as well, as Madison Rishel worked a two-out walk. She was left stranded however, as Brianna Holguin popped out to end the game.
