WILLIAMSBURG, V.A.- FDU shot a +25 (877) on their way to a 7
th place finish at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate in an event that concluded on Tuesday afternoon.
The Knights put themselves in good position firing numbers of 288 and 285 in rounds one and two. This gave them a three-shot lead heading into the final round. Despite the lead, things were not meant to be for FDU. They fired a 304 in the final 18 to cement their 7
th place finish.
One thing FDU did not struggle with at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club was putting circles on the scorecard. As a team, the Knights made 42 birdies which was tied for second-most in the field of 13 teams. The courses par 5s were the friendliest to FDU this week as they totaled a score of -4 on those holes, which was tied for fifth-best as a team.
Perhaps, most promising for FDU was having three individuals earn top-10 results.
Pyae Phyo Thu (-3) finished in solo second.
Jaime Julve (-2) was just one shot back of him in third place. Rounding it out was
Leon Heitz, who shot a +2 and finished tied for 10
th.
Pyae Phyo Thu started off the week hot. He birdied two of the first four holes in route to an even score in round one. The second round got off to an even better start. He made four birdies on the front nine to put up a 32 at the turn. A bogey on 10 did cool him off, but he was able to recover and make a birdie on 13. He ended the day with a -3 for the round and the tournament. Two birdies on the first three holes in the final round made it seem like Pyae Pyo Thu may have saved his best golf for the last round, but a bogey at three slowed his pace. He did finish the tournament with a birdie at 18 for an even final round and a second-place finish. This was the best finish of his career.
Jaime Julve got off to about as a good as a start as you can ask for. He birdied holes 4-6 on his way a -2 in round one. His second round was very steady, totaling three bogeys and two birdies for a score of +1. In the final round, Julve birdied holes 2, 3, and 6 before bogeying 7 and 9 to slow his momentum. He was able to bounce back and par each of the last nine holes for a -1 on the day and a -2 for the tournament.
Leon Heitz shot scores of -2, E, and +4 for his 10
th place tie. However, he made the most fireworks of the week with his first collegiate ace in round one on the 16
th hole. This propelled Heitz to go -3 on the last three holes of day one and finish the day with a 69.
The Knights will take on Hofstra and Monmouth in a tri-match at Trump National Golf Club on April 4 at 1:30pm.
