DELAND, Fla. - FDU softball scored in each of the final four innings Sunday as the Knights (3-2, 0-0 NEC) bested Providence to close their stint in the Frank Griffin Classic, hosted by Stetson. Toppling the Friars in five innings, FDU came away with three extra-base hits and a pair of homers en route to the 11-3 run-rule victory.
After a tough offensive outing yesterday, the Knights strung together a season-best 11 hits in 25 recorded at-bats with graduate student
Courtney Mahoney leading the charge with four RBI as the fifth-year Knight would go 3-for-3 on the afternoon.
Making her second start and third appearance of the season, graduate student pitcher
Alayna Savaglio got right to work, sitting down the first three batters she faced via flyouts to Mahoney who made the start in centerfield. Despite earning a pair of base runners in the home half of the first, FDU would be unable to score sophomores
Jess DeWitt and
Andreya Flores who reached safely.
In the following frame, FDU would break open the scoring as
Sydney Newton rounded third heading home after an error by the Friars' pitcher created the scoring opportunity. Newton entered the game as a pinch runner for fellow sophomore
Hayden Salter who earned a walk to begin the inning. With a 1-0 lead heading to the third, a pair of foul outs would leave only a dribbler to Savaglio as the only fair ball in the inning as the senior received some more run protection with a seven spot in the bottom of the inning.
Each of FDU's first three batters in the home third got on base with Mahoney singling to right, DeWitt earning a 4-0 walk and Flores doubling to left center. Flores' extra-base hit would score Mahoney while DeWitt would score one batter later on a passed ball that also moved freshman
Kendalyn Macias who came in to run for Flores. The rally continued with an RBI single from senior Haley Ramberg to score Macias, followed by a two-run double by Triska to widen FDU's lead to 6-0.
Mahoney would tack-on another run before the inning's close with a double down the right field line to score FDU's shortstop Triska and left fielder
Isabella Herring.
Savaglio's scoreless outing came to an end in the fourth inning as Providence's Rachael Petrarca hit a home run to left field to get the Friars on the board, trailing 8-1. Flores would hit the Knights' first home run of the campaign three outs later as the Orange, Calif. native hit a rocket over the left field fence to give FDU an eight-run lead.
Down the stretch, the marked visitors would tack on a pair of runs to end FDU's chance of concluding the game after the top of the fifth as the BIG EAST side would cut the lead to 9-3. After a lead-off single by Triska in the bottom of the fifth inning, Allenwood, N.J. native Mahoney would walk things off for
Chris Foye's Knights with a two-run blast to give FDU an 11-3 victory in five innings.
The Knights' southpaw Savaglio dazzled in her first complete game of the season, allowing just two earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts as the Middletown, N.Y. product moved to 2-0 on the young season.
FDU heads back on the road next weekend for a cross country trip to San Diego, Calif., the hometown of DeWitt and Newton, for the Torero Classic as the Knights are set to take-on Utah Tech, San Diego, Boise State and Wichita State over three days beginning Friday, February 17. Times, listed in both Eastern and Pacific, are available on the Knights' official webpage.
