EMMITSBURG, Md. - Looking to snap Mount St. Mary's 13-game win streak, the Knights came into Saturday's series finale in Emittsburg at Our Lady of the Meadows Field hungry and continue their four-series streak of winning at least won game in Northeast Conference Action.
After a leadoff double by junior shortstop
Cassidy Triska, the Knights (17-19, 9-6 NEC) had an early runner in scoring position with senior center fielder
Courtney Mahoney at the plate. Mahoney reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, advancing Triska to the third base make and giving FDU two on with nobody out in the first frame. With four-time NEC Rookie of the Week, freshman second baseman,
Jess DeWitt at the field, a fielder's choice was on the menu, eliminating Mahoney at second, while scoring the Murreita, Calif. native Triska to give FDU a 1-0 advantage in the finale with two on and just one out.
Allowing a walk and a pair of stole bases in the bottom half of the opening inning, Knights' starter
Alayna Savaglio was in a tricky situation, conceding a run on a wild pitch to even the score at one, though that would be all of the damage done in the first. FDU would bounce back in the second with Mahoney, who's worked her way up in the lineup, singling to right to score two runs by rookies
Isabella Herring and
Sabrina Javorsky to put the Knights up 3-1.
Despite some chances for both sides the rest of the way, neither club would be able to convert until Triska blasted a solo home run to deep center in the seventh inning, her team-best eighth of the season, the icing on top of a 4-1 win for FDU, redemption after falling in the first two games of the series in what is just the second series loss of the season for the Knights in NEC play.
In the circle, Savaglio threw a complete game, her 10th of 2022, allowing just one run on two hits with eight strikeouts.
"It was a great team win today," commented head coach
Chris Foye. "Alayna pitched lights-out and our hitting and defense was on point. It's nice to get a win and get back on track with a big week coming up."
That big week Foye speaks of gets consists of five home games for the Knights at FDU Softball Field beginning with a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. against Stony Brook on Tuesday, April 19, live on NEC Front Row and a three-game series beginning on Saturday, April 23, with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and a single game the following day at 12 p.m. noon against league-leading Saint Francis U (Pa.). All three games in the SFU series will also air live on NEC Front Row.
