Softball Drops Doubleheader on Senior Day Against Hofstra

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team (11-21) honored its six seniors and concluded its 2021 season with a 5-4 loss in nine innings in game one and an 8-2 defeat in game two against Hofstra (16-14) on Sunday afternoon from the FDU Softball Field.

Prior to game one, seniors Rylie Schmeh, Abby England, and Logan Kolehmainen and graduate students Summer Mendoza, Erica Johnson and Madison Emerson were recognized for winning 46 games together, including 23 NEC wins and matched a program-high with 11 wins in conference this season.

In game one, Schmeh led the offense with a 2-4 performance, drove in two runs with an RBI double, and scored a run. Sophomore Cassidy Triska recorded an RBI single that scored junior Courtney Mahoney in the sixth inning. Junior Jillian Ward also registered an RBI with a single that scored Schmeh. Junior Alayna Savaglio pitched her 10th complete game of the year and struck out 11 batters while only allowing five hits.

In game two, Schmeh belted her second career homer that also scored Triska for the Knights two runs. Mahoney and Ward also recorded hits in the game.

How it Happened
  • Savaglio took the bump in game one and got out of a jam with runners on first and second and was able to strike out and force a fly out to the end the top of the first inning.
  • After Savaglio retired the side in the top of the second, Schmeh got her first hit of the game in the bottom half of the second.
  • The Pride also got two runners on in the top of the third before being set down and scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth with a homer.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Ward eventually reached third base after singling to center field, but was left on third.
  • After Hofstra added its second run of the game in the top of the sixth, FDU's offense responded with four runs of their own with an RBI single from Triska, a two-RBI double from Schmeh, and an RBI single from Ward as FDU led 4-2 after six.
  • The Pride tied the game in the top of the seventh with an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly to center field and FDU got Mahoney to second and Emerson to first before being retired to force extras.
  • The Knights got the bases loaded with one out in the eighth, but were unable to score and fell 5-4 after Hofstra added a run in the top of the ninth.

How it Happened
  • Johnson took the mound for the final time in game two and pitched a scoreless first inning before being relieved by England with one out in the second, who set down the final two batters.
  • England then cruised through the third inning with three straight outs and retired three batters in the top of the fourth in what was a pitcher's duel early.
  • Schmeh gave the Knights a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on the first pitch with a homer to center field that scored Triska.
  • Hofstra however put up eight runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Schmeh singled to right field and Ward doubled to left to put runners on second and third, but didn't score as the dropped game two in the rain.

  • Emerson: 166 career games and starts, ranks third in program history with 161 career hits, third in career batting average with a .321 career mark, fifth in career doubles with 27, and eighth in RBI's with 65.
  • Mendoza: 169 career games and 163 starts, ranks second in program history with seven career triples, recorded 115 career hits, which is right outside the top 10 in program history.
  • Johnson: Appeared in 81 career games, ranks tied for second in program history with four career saves, a 5.13 career ERA over 267.1 innings pitched, and 144 strikeouts.
  • Schmeh: 138 career games and 131 starts, owns the program record in triples with nine, logged 85 career hits, driven in 38 career RBI's, and scored 40 runs over 351 plate appearances.
  • England: 90 career appearances, has pitched 185.2 career innings, struck out 160 batters, won nine games, eight career complete games, a 4.96 career ERA, and hit five career homers.
  • Kolehmainen: 102 career games and 93 starts, 43 career hits, scored 31 runs, and drove in 14 runs over 231 at-bats.
