Softball Falls in NEC Doubleheader at Saint Francis U on Thursday

LORETTO, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team (1-13, 1-11 NEC) dropped both games of Thursday's doubleheader with Saint Francis U (26-7, 11-1 NEC) from the SFU Softball Field with an 8-0 loss in five innings in game one and 2-0 in game two.

In game one, junior Courtney Mahoney went 2-2 from the dish with a pair of singles and pitched 4.1 innings on the mound. Freshman Abbey Hoesman also reached base as she drew a walk.

In game two, Mahoney tallied her third hit of the day and went 1-3 at the plate. Junior Samantha Cortez reached base twice with a single and a walk. Sophomore Malori Bell pitched 5.1 innings and only allowed one run on five hits and struck out four batters.

Coach Foye's Thoughts
"Malori did a phenomenal job in the 2nd game coming in to pitch with runners on and getting us out of a jam, that was huge for us. She was able to keep the hitters off balance and got us a lot of pop fly outs."

"Courtney showed a lot of guts giving us a spot start on the mound after primarily playing the outfield the last few games. She has been on fire on the offensive side finding ways to get on base and coming up with some clutch hits giving us opportunities to keep us in games."

Game 1: SFU 8, FDU 0 (F/5)
How it Happened
  • Mahoney opened the first inning with a single to center field and she took the bump for FDU in game one as SFU took a 2-0 after one inning of play sparked by an RBI single and a steal of home plate.
  • After SFU added a run to their lead in the bottom of the second inning, Mahoney again singled up the middle to get on base, but graduate student Madison Emerson grounded out to third to end the top of the third.
  • Hoesman drew a walk in the top of the fifth with one out, but was unable to advance to second and SFU ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with four runs sparked by a three-run homer.
Game 2: SFU 2, FDU 0
How it Happened
  • Graduate student Erica Johnson started game two and allowed an early run on a wild pitch before Bell came into the game to record the final out of the inning.
  • Cortez recorded FDU's first hit of the game in the top of the second inning with a single up the middle and Bell held SFU scoreless in the second and third innings while forcing the Red Flash to strand a combined four runners on base.
  • Mahoney poked a single to right center and reached third base before sophomore Cassidy Triska popped out to second base to end the top of the fourth.
  • SFU added another run to the lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double and Cortez reached base for the second time to open the fifth and reached third before sophomore Lauren Luna grounded out to first.
  • Junior Alayna Savaglio reached first base off an error in the top of the seventh inning to put the tying run on base, but the Knights were unable to tie the game.
