Softball Splits Tuesday Twin Bill Against Mount St. Mary's

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team (8-18, 8-16 NEC) split the twin bill against Mount St. Mary's (17-24, 10-13 NEC) with a 6-2 win in game one and a 2-0 loss on Tuesday afternoon from the FDU Softball Field.

In game one, junior Alayna Savaglio pitched her seventh complete game of the season, struck out 10 batters, and only allowed two hits. Fellow junior Courtney Mahoney belted a two-run homer, her first of the season. Sophomore Hailey Ramberg drove in two runs with a single. Freshman Riley Phillips and graduate student Summer Mendoza also drove in RBI's in the contest.

In game two, Savaglio pitched another complete game, struck out 14 batters, and only allowed two hits. Seniors Rylie Schmeh and Logan Kolehmainen, sophomore Cassidy Triska, and freshman Abbey Hoesman each got hits in the contest. Savaglio combined to pitch 14.0 innings, only allowed four hits, and struck out a combined 24 batters.

Coach Foye's Thoughts
"Another phenomenal performance by Alayna with 24 strikeouts. Unfortunately we couldn't get her runs in the second game but she definitely did her part on the mound. She continues to prove to us why she should have the ball on the mound."

"Hailey has been making some adjustments at the plate and her 2 out 2rbi single to take lead was huge for us because we needed to score first and that got the ball rolling for us. Courtney's homer put us back on top to give us the lead and helped take some pressure off Alayna on the mound."

Game 1: FDU 6, Mount St. Mary's 2
How it Happened
  • Savaglio took the hill in game one and retired the first three batters of the game, before allowing a single and striking out the next three batters in the top of the second.
  • Sophomore Savannah Thornell recorded the Knights first hit in the bottom of the second, but was left on first and Savaglio set the Mountaineers down in order in the top of the third.
  • The Mount had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the fourth before Savaglio set the next two batters down via a fly out and a strike out.
  • FDU broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth when Emerson and Triska reached second and third and Ramberg hit a ball to center field that scored the two base runners as FDU led 2-0.
  • After the Mount tied the game in the top of the fifth, Mahoney belted her first homer of the year over the center field wall with junior Jillian Ward on base as the Knights took a 4-2 advantage.
  • FDU extended the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Phillips drove in Schmeh with a single through the right side and Mendoza singled to left to score freshman Megan Berg.
  • Savaglio retired the Mountaineers in order in the top of the seventh as FDU won 6-2.
Game 2: Mount St. Mary's 2, FDU 0
How it Happened
  • Savaglio took the bump again in game two and the Mount got runners on first and second in the top of the first before Savaglio punched out her second batter of the game to retire the side.
  • Savaglio then struck out the next six Mount batters between the top of the second and third innings and the FDU offense got the first hit of the game in the bottom half of the second on a single from Schmeh.
  • The south-paw retired the next two batters in the top of the fourth to extend her streak to nine straight retired batters before allowing a single, but bounced back with a backwards K.
  • Hoesman singled in the top of the fifth and sophomore Lauren Luna came into run and got into scoring position with two outs, but was left on base.
  • Mount took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth and Mahoney drew a walk in the bottom half of the inning, but the Mountaineers recorded a double play to end the frame.
