Men's Soccer Downed by Princeton at Home

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team surrendered two goals in each half to defending Ivy League champion Princeton, falling 4-0 at University Stadium Saturday night.

Despite taking as many shots (14) as the Tigers (3-2), the Knights (4-3) could not find the back of the net against a tough Tigers defense that limited FDU's chances to five shots on goal, all in the second half.

"I don't think we represented ourselves the way we would have liked to tonight," head coach Seth Roland said after the game. "I think we can do a lot better, and if we want to be successful this year, then we will need to do a lot better, especially as we have our conference opener next Sunday at Robert Morris."

Freshman Jared Dillon and senior Daniel Lasarte took all five FDU shots on goal, with Dillon accounting for three and Lasarte a pair of strikes on target. Junior goalkeeper Jahmali Waite made a first-half save for his lone stop in 45 minutes of action.

Princeton opened the game with a goal in the tenth minute by Frankie DeRosa. FDU's defense blocked another shot and Waite then made his save in the 14th minute, but the Tigers added to their advantage with a goal by Walker Gillespie at the 18-minute mark.

The Knights pressed on the attack for a response late in the first half, with Lasarte and junior Diego Arribas each having chances in the final 12 minutes of the half. Their shots, however, went wide of the net to send the game into halftime with Princeton up 2-0.

The Tigers would go on to add insurance goals in the 55th and 71st minute to go up by four goals, but the Knights turned on the pressure late with nine shots in the final 20 minutes of play.

In a frantic final two minutes, the Knights had five tries on goal starting with an Arribas shot off a free kick. Lasarte then centered a shot after making a move around a Princeton defender, but goalkeeper Mohamed Abdelhamid stopped the Lasarte shot.

FDU then drew a handball in the penalty box with 50 seconds remaining, but Arribas' shot hit off the crossbar. Dillon then corralled the rebounded ball and lined a quick shot that was gloved by Abdelhamid. The freshman then quickly tried one last effort at goal, but his final shot was also stopped as Princeton ran out the clock to end the match.

Junior goalkeeper Steven Ortiz made his FDU debut and played the entire second half in net. Senior Gabriele Lanzani played 11 minutes off the bench in his first action of the season, and freshman Jake Gross also subbed in for 52 minutes on defense to make his collegiate debut.

The Knights have a week-long break before starting Northeast Conference play on Sunday, September 29, when they travel to Robert Morris for a 3 p.m., game in Moon Township, Pa.
