HARMAR, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team won the majority of doubles matches but only picked up two singles victories in a tough 4-3 road loss to Duquesne Friday night.
The Knights (6-9) won each of the last two doubles matches to take the first overall point in the match, but the Dukes (8-9) won two of the first three singles matches to tie the match score at 2-2. Duquesne then picked up wins in the next two singles matches to finish with the overall victory, as FDU earned the final singles point after Duquesne had clinched the win.
Sophomore
Moric Budinszky was part of wins in both singles and doubles play. He teamed with freshman
Mehdi Dhouib at the second doubles spot to win 6-3, and he later weathered a tough challenge from Duquesne's Dane Bendel and was up in the match 7-6 (5), 4-6, 3-2 when Bendel retired to cede the point to Budinszky.
Junior
Ivan Solans Diaz and sophomore
Eduardo Cabral captured a 6-4 win at third doubles to earn the Knights the overall doubles point over the Dukes. Dhouib earned his 11th singles win of the season and improved his dual match record to 7-6 at the no. 1 spot with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Chris Corrao.
Sophomore
Andris Gudins battled his Duquense adversary Alex Mascioli to a third set in his no. 2 singles match. Gudins won the first set 6-3 but was then edged in tightly-contested second set, 6-7 (3). Mascioli then jumped out in front in the decisive third set and Gudins could not match down the stretch to fall 3-6.
FDU returns to Northeast Conference play in its next match on Sunday at Mount St. Mary's beginning at 1 p.m.
