Men's Soccer Falls To Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -  The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team was defeated 3-1 Tuesday afternoon by the Iona Gaels at Mazzella Field, moving their record to 3-3-2 on the season.  FDU returns to action on Sunday, September 23 when they host Yale in Teaneck.

Wojciech Piwowarczyk scored the lone tally for the Knights, his first of the season.  Goalkeeper Michael Mejia made six saves on the afternoon.

The Knights found themselves in an early hole Tuesday against the Gaels, falling down 2-0 in the first half before stopping the Iona surge with a goal of their own.

Mejia was forced to make a number of tough saves early, turning aside a header in the box as well as a quick strike from Iona forward Essad Makic.

Mejia and the Knights back line were tested heavily again just minutes later after the Gaels were awarded a pair of corners.  While FDU managed to defend the first effort nicely, the Gaels cashed in the second time after Tomas Jammett's jumping kickk at the far back post connected with the ball as it was lobbed into the box to put Iona up 1-0.

A brief counterattack from the Knights saw an effort from Daniel Lasarte saved.  Iona would make it 2-0 in the 23' after Mauro Bravo's free kick bounced off the crossbar and in from 20 yards out.

FDU managed to stem the Gaels push with a marker of their own shortly thereafter, getting some offense from an unlikely source as Lasarte's free kick flicked into the box behind the keeper to a waiting Piwowarczyk, who calmly slotted the header into an open net.

Lasarte saw one more effort saved in the 39' as the Knights went into the locker rooms down 2-1.

The Knights nearly leveled in the opening minutes of the second after a flurry of chances.  Jacob Labovitz and Alvaro Rubio were denied in the 46', and in the 58' Fallou Tounkara nearly headed home a second tally for the Knights off a corner, however the effort was saved.

Iona added an insurance goal in the 58' to make it 3-1 and seal up the victory for the Gaels.
