Softball Swept By LIU Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. --  The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team was swept in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon against LIU Brooklyn, losing by scores of 8-0 and 7-2.  The losses move the Knights overall record to 12-23, including a 4-6 mark in NEC play.

FDU returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Wagner in a Senior Day double-header at the FDU Softball Field in Hackensack beginning at 1 p.m.

Game One: LIU Brooklyn 8, Fairleigh Dickinson 0 (Five Innings)

Blackbirds pitcher Victoria Lowe stymied the Knights offense in game one, scattering just two hits on the afternoon and retiring 13 of the last 14 batters she faced. Lowe also struck out a pair.

FDU threatened early, putting runners on first and second with two outs after Madison Emerson managed to draw a walk and Holly Mercier drove a single to left field, however, Reanna Cervantes popped up the next at bat to end the inning.

LIU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after Patricia Griffin smashed a two-run double to center field.

The Blackbirds would tack on another run in the second to make it 2-0 before blowing the game open with a four-hit, five run outburst in the third.

Baylee Ports received the loss in the circle for FDU, moving her record to 5-7 on the season.  Mercier and Schmeh recorded the hits for the Knights.

Game Two: LIU Brooklyn 7, Fairleigh Dickinson 2

The Knights managed to find their footing at the plate in game two, putting up five hits and plating a pair of runs against LIU hurler Erynn Sobieski, however the Blackbirds offense picked up right where it left off in game one, knocking in seven runs off of 10 hits to pick up the sweep.

LIU gained the lead in the bottom of the first once again, going up 1-0 on a sacrifice fly to left field.  They would add three more in the second to push the score to 4-0.

The Knights recouped two runs in the top of the fourth, however. Serena Meehan drove a two-out single to left before Shcmeh was hit by a pitch to put two on for Abby England.  England crushed a double deep to center field that scored both Meehan and Schmeh to cut the Blackbird lead down to 4-2.

The Blackbirds tacked on a run in the fifth as well as a pair in the sixth to push the lead to 7-2 before Lowe was brought in to pick up the save and close things out for LIU.

Erica Johnson earned the loss in the circle for FDU, moving her record to 3-9 on the season.  England led the Knights at the plate, going 2-3 with a pair of RBIs.
