Knights End West Coast Swing With 2-1 Win Over UC Davis

DAVIS, CA -  The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team defeated UC Davis Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-1 to close out their west coast road swing with a 1-6 mark.  The win moves the Knights overall record to 5-14 on the year.

FDU will return to action on Wednesday, March 21st when they open up the home portion of their schedule with a double-header against Hartford beginning at 2 p.m.

After both squads failed to materialize anything in the games opening frame, FDU opened the scoring in the top of the second.  After Rylie Schmeh drew a walk to reach base, Abby England belted a towering two-run home run over the left-field fence to put the Knights on the board at 2-0 early on.

England managed to hold UC Davis at bay in the bottom of the second to preserve the Knight lead at two runs heading into the third.  Brooke Yanez was efficient in the circle for the Aggies, limiting the Knights to just one hit and no runs over the final four innings of ball.

It would fall to England to preserve the Knights lead, as the freshman locked it down in the circle for the Knights as well, enjoying a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth.  England found herself with two one and two out trying to preserve the Knights lead, however the freshman once again evaded trouble, throwing a ground ball pitch to Isabella Leon to end the inning.

UC Davis managed to recoup one run in the bottom of the 5th, however.  Frankie Mendoza belted a double to center field that scored a runner from second to cut FDU's lead in half as England was relieved by Erica Johnson.  Johnson managed to get the third out of the inning on another ground ball to short.

Needing three outs to earn their first win of the road trip, Johnson was tapped to close out the 7th, and the sophomore delivered three consecutive outs to earn the save.

England earned the win, her third of the season to push her record to 3-3 on the season.  The Knights finished with two runs off of three hits and committed one error.  Holly Mercier, Summer Mendoza, and England each finished with one hit.  England finished with both RBI's for FDU.
