FULL WEEKEND RESULTS
NEWARK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team finished the NJIT Winter Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The two-day Invitational was the first action in 2018 and consisted of Bucknell, Monmouth, and NJIT.
Highlighting the second day was William Bourne, who defeated Monmouth's Ole Gettler in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. With the win, Bourne captured off a perfect weekend in singles competition by winning all three of his matches. Maciej Autuch also battled his tail off to garner a win by getting the best of Andrei Vitiuc of Bucnell in a close match 6-4, 7-6 (10).
Also in the third round of singles, Moric Budinszky and Miki Nobuzawa both fell in close matches. Budinszky was defeated 6-3, 6-4, by Colin Sacco of Bucknell, while Nobuzawa lost to Richard Rangga of NJIT 6-4, 6-2.
"Tennis is a sport of adjustments and our men made changes in their matches to help better their play for down the road success," said assistant coach Jacob Mishkin. "While all did not receive the results they hoped for, they understand that today was another stepping stone for the overall big picture objective we have. Having this mindset will lead to continued growth."
In doubles, FDU's duo of Nobuzawa and Autuch fought hard but ultimately the Highlanders pair of Richard Rangga and George Svensson got the upper hand and defeated the Knights pair 7-6 (4).
The Knights will head to Hempstead, New York, and take on the Pride of Hofstra on Saturday, February 3, at 6:00 p.m.
DAY ONE RESULTS
NEWARK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team completed day one at NJIT. The Knights competed in 15 matches throughout the entirety of the day. It was the beginning of a long spring schedule ahead for FDU.
"It's great to be competing again and there were definitely some bright spots. Niclas and Billy each won two singles matches," head coach Jeff Brandes said. "However, overall there needs to be stronger focus on the things we worked on during the fall season."
William Bourne and Niclas Pietsch each recorded two wins on the day going 2-0. In round 1, Bourne defeated Max Garramone of Bucknell 6-4, 7-5, at No. 6 singles. Then in round 2, Bourne got the best of George Svensson of NJIT 6-2, 4-6, (10-6). Pietsch registered two impressive wins on his own by knocking off Max Kane of Bucknell in three-sets 6-3, 2-6, 10-7, while then defeating Abdullah Osman of NJIT is straight sets 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
At No. 5 singles, Miki Nobuzawa fought hard but fell to Colin Sacco of Bucknell in three sets 7-5, 2-6, (10-5). At No. 2 singles, Youssef Sader had his moments but was topped by Alejandro Gomez Estrada of Monmouth 6-2, 7-5, in a close match. Maciej Autuch came close in both of his matches but ultimately could find a way to rally for a win, losing to Sergio Martinez of Monmouth 6-4, 6-4, and NJIT's Richard Rangga 6-2, 6-4.
Assistant coach Jacob Mishkin said that, "Today was a great day of learning and will be important as we finish off our invite on strong note. Knowing our men and their competitive nature, I expect to see great adjustments tomorrow."
In doubles, FDU's pair of Sader and Pietsch fought hard but could not prevail against the duo of Sergio Martinez and William Cooke Wharton 7-5, at No. 2 doubles.
