STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader at Wagner on Saturday afternoon. The Knights led 1-0 in both games, but the Seahawks quickly answered.
Game 1 – Wagner 5, Fairleigh Dickinson 2
Reanna Cervantes led off the game with a solo home run for the third time this week. It was Cervantes' third of the season and gave Fairleigh Dickinson (2-18, 0-3 NEC).
Erica Johnson retired Wagner (9-17, 2-1 NEC) in the first before the Seahawks tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Amelia Van Orman doubled in Kalia Smith with two outs.
Wagner then took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. The first two hitters of the inning reached on a single and an error. That brought up Stefanie Aplin, who singled to center to bring Kendra Prihoda.
The Seahawks would do the rest of their damage in the fourth. Zoe Bender came to the plate with the bases loaded and singled to center, which cleared the bases.
Cervantes added to her RBI total when she played
Holly Mercier in the fifth. Mercier led off the inning with a single, advanced to second and stole third before scoring off the Cervantes single to left.
Cervantes moved over to second on a wild pitch but was stranded there as the inning ended.
In the top of the seventh, the Knights mounted a rally.
Summer Mendoza started things with a doubled but was thrown out at third. After a strikeout,
Stephanie Collins reached, and
Jaymee Jackson bunted, and both moved up to second and third after an error. Cervantes was walked to load the bases.
Cheryl Lopez flew out to center to end the game with the bases loaded.
Morgan Brown (6-4) went the full seven innings for Wagner and struck out 10.
Erica Johnson (2-5) allowed four runs over three innings.
Game 2 – Wagner 10, Fairleigh Dickinson 2 – 5 Innings
Just like in game one, Fairleigh Dickinson (2-19, 0-4 NEC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. This time it was
Kellie Natham that drove in the first run of the game. The sophomore doubled to left center to score
Cheryl Lopez.
Wagner (10-17, 3-1 NEC) quickly responded and plated seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. The first three hitters reached to load the bases with no outs. Kendra Prihoda scored on a ground out. The next two batters both recorded hits. The second hitter was Kaila Smith, who hit a two-run homer to make it 4-1. A two-run single and a triple added three more for the Seahawks.
A fielder choice from
Jaymee Jackson plated the second run for the Knights, which was scored by
Holly Mercier. However, the Seahawks answered with a single run of their own in the bottom of the second.
Brianna Tredway drove in a pair of runs with a single to right field to make it 10-2 and get Wagner the run-rule win.
McKaleigh Goodale (2-10) went the full five innings for Wagner to earn the win.
Madison Emerson (0-6) lasted only two-thirds of an inning and allowed seven runs.
Fairleigh Dickinson returns to action tomorrow for a doubleheader at Mount St. Mary's. First pitch is set for 1:30 pm in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
