Softball Wins at Connecticut, 7-6

STORRS, Conn. – Fairleigh Dickinson softball went on the road and won at Connecticut 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon behind six RBI from freshman and seven innings from another first-year Knight.

Ana Hayes hit her second home run of the season and knocked in four RBI while Summer Mendoza drove in two more and Francine Villalobos added one RBI to get Fairleigh Dickinson (3-25) the road win.

Connecticut (15-23) scored in the first and seventh innings, but the three runs in both of the frames were not enough. The Huskies trailed 7-3 heading into the seventh before scoring three times but left the bases loaded in the final frame as Johnson came back into the circle for Baylee Ports to get the final out – ground out to Johnson.

The two teams combined to strand 15 runners.

The Knights took the lead for good in the second inning after the Huskies scored three times in the bottom half of the first. Villalobos singled to center to score Kellie Natham to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Hayes then delivered with the three-run long ball to left field to make it a 4-3 game.

Two innings later, Hayes drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Knights a 5-3 lead. Two batters later, Mendoza singled through the right side to plate Hayes and Villalobos.

Erica Johnson pitched to 33 of the 36 batter in the game and recorded all 21 outs for the Knights in the circle. The freshman picked up her third win of the season while allowing six runs – two earned – and striking out two.

The Knights return to action tomorrow afternoon at the FDU Softball Field when the Knights host Villanova for a doubleheader starting at 2:30.
